Ten Style Suggestions For Women Over 50

If you’re a lady over fifty, you should dress to reflect the kind of woman you’ve become.

However, there is an obsession with youth and staying youthful in our environment. You then experience pressure to dress in a way that makes you “look” younger by copying the looks of younger ladies. But this isn’t the best course of action.

This year is my 60th birthday. Not because I’m attempting to look thirty, but rather because I’ve never felt or looked better! It’s because I always tailor my style to fit my unique personality and take care of myself. I want to appear my age, not half that! I know I want to look amazing for my age. For that reason, I created these fashion advice pieces for women who are over 50! The most important thing to keep in mind before we begin is that I never advise attempting to “dress your age.” Your age shouldn’t determine your style, at least not in my Dressing Your Truth system! Rather, I instruct women on how to design a unique look based on their unique type of attractiveness. With a few simple profiling tools, you may quickly ascertain which of the four energy types you belong to.

After that, all we really do is concentrate on the innate movement and energy you possess, and you learn how to dress accordingly! In addition, I’ve put up a list of fashion dos and don’ts for over-50-year-old mature ladies. Think of them more as recommendations to help you put together a stylish yet distinctive wardrobe. Rather than merely settling with simple trends that could not fit your evolving figure, you want a style that speaks to your mature personality.

You’ll enjoy these recommendations, then, if you’re wondering how to appear trendy at 50! What to Wear and What Not to Wear After 50

1. Excessive cosmetics Yes, we are jumping right in. Do you want to age faster than time? Use excessive amounts of makeup. Sadly, an older lady who overdoes makeup runs the risk of appearing harsh, unappealing, or like she’s acting. Your skin will naturally get more texture and finer wrinkles as you get older. But they won’t retain makeup properly at all if you apply thick layers of it on top of them. Your fine wrinkles will really be accentuated. The classic “too much makeup” style of vivid blue eyeshadow, heavy foundation, dramatic blush, and deeply pigmented, feathery red lipstick is what you want to stay away from. Instead, practice “less is more!” Reducing the amount of the classic makeup look I described earlier. Sparkles in your eyeshadow should be avoided, as they will only get trapped in the creases. Instead, go for matte tones; you’ll see a significant improvement. I also suggest viewing these tutorials on cosmetics designed especially for older skin:

2. Splitting There’s a widespread perception that cleavage signifies empowerment. Though it may seem liberating and sexually mature, ladies our age find it to be unappealing and desperate. It’s obvious what not to wear when it comes to cleavage! A strong piece of advice: Your blouse’s cut or plunging necklines won’t make you feel confident or feminine. That originates from a deeper part of yourself. Simply put, clothing is just another way for you to show off how much of a gorgeous, experienced woman you are. What to do: Wear opulent materials like cashmere, silk, and satin to flaunt your seductive femininity. For example, your Type’s cream or champagne, plum or light purple—fur detailing and deep colors—will help you embrace your innate sensuality without coming across as needy or attention-seeking.

3. Unclean and Excessive Apparel Every few years, a new fashion trend using loose clothing emerges. Large sweaters, big shirts, and baggy jeans are common outfit choices for young ladies and celebrities. If you think they might cover up more weight or other perceived “imperfections” of your aging body, you might even find yourself enticed to wear them. But oversized clothes actually highlights all of these traits rather than masking them. Thus, avoid them! At this age, baggy clothing makes you appear larger. One exception exists. Wearing stylishly baggy pants is acceptable as long as you pair them with a form-fitting blouse or even a well-fitting blazer. Alternatively, if you pair a slouchy sweater with fitting pants like skinny jeans, you’ll look fantastic. Avoid dressing in loose garments that cover every part of your body. For mature ladies, it just doesn’t work! What to wear instead: Put on appropriately fitting clothing. You’ll notice a remarkable difference. You won’t experience shyness or fear of being recognized. Your confidence, body, and sense of style will make you feel good. Don’t go overboard with the “fitted” look, though; anything too tight will draw attention away from your age-related changes in features.

4. Pale, muted hues While I’m not saying you should just wear neutral hues, you should try to avoid wearing the same light neutral color throughout your entire ensemble, including your jewelry and accessories. On mature skin, this monochrome effect is far too harsh. A special reminder to Type 4 women—the only Type of women who can wear black—that not everything in your wardrobe, including your shoes, jewelry, accessories, and clothes, should be black. You can wear a lot of amazing Type 4 colors, but black is a great neutral for you. You can add bold and vivid colors to your ensemble to add intrigue and personality.

5. Shoes Even though heels are typically associated with femininity, I believe we lay too much emphasis on them. They are actually quite bad for your feet, knees, and hips; therefore, you don’t need them to feel gorgeous! They just become unusable additions to any mature woman’s wardrobe as she gets older. Blisters and back problems are the more common outcomes than increased confidence. Shoes to wear: flats and slingbacks. Your balance and joints are far safer in these shoes. We frequently highlight true-to-Type footwear in StyleInspire, which are Type-specific shopping boards available only to our Lifestyle members. This footwear not only fits your type perfectly, but it also offers you comfort and style without sacrificing any fashion.

6. Hot pants and crop tops Honestly, these are just hip looks for adolescent girls and young ladies. Influencers and fashion bloggers are known to sport these looks with ease. But exercise caution! Remember that you can still be sultry as an over-50 mature woman without baring too much skin. Hot pants, which is another word for “short shorts,” will not help you appear young and stylish, and crop tops will significantly age you. Being a woman over 50 has many liberating aspects, one of which is not worrying what other people think of me. For me, dressing well is about more than just looking good. That is behind us now! You’ve arrived at a place where you feel at ease with who you are. I want my wardrobe to complement my lifestyle in these modern times. I want to be able to move freely, feel comfortable, and continue being active without having to worry about my shorts showing through or my shirt riding up when I move. I can’t wait to wear items that will help me lead a healthy lifestyle! What to wear: Shorts and t-shirts are acceptable as long as they provide adequate coverage! You can wear form-fitting, but not tight, shirts. Burmuda shorts, whose length ends precisely at the top of your knees, are another excellent choice for you.

7. An Overabundance of Retro Styles It’s best to use caution when mixing too many “old-fashioned” pieces together. For instance, you shouldn’t pair flesh-colored tights with a tweed skirt, Brogues, and shoes. When combined, those will transport you back several decades—but not in a hip, retro sense! All they’ll do is make you appear lot older than you want to. Some women want to look younger by following trends, but other women give up on style completely and label themselves as “grandma” fashionistas in an attempt to maintain their youthful appearance. “Grandma is a role, not a style,” is my philosophy nonetheless. When it comes to fashion after fifty, there’s no reason you have to start perming your hair and dressing like your mother or grandmother. The clothing they wore followed the trends of the time, but it’s not for you! There’s no need to turn into the Beverly Hillbillies’ Granny. What to Wear: To swiftly update your look with a touch of modern elegance, pair skirts with chic boots. Tennis shoes are another fun, casual alternative. However, to make your shoes feel like a stylish accessory rather than an afterthought, make sure the rest of your outfit is genuinely put together.

8. Fur One of those simple, quick, and affordable items we love to grab on the way out to get the mail or take the dog for a brief walk is a fleece zip-up sweater. However, what do they actually say about your personality, style, and you? Not a lot. Additionally, I don’t think these fleece sweaters fit our bodies well as we turn fifty and beyond. What to wear: Search for a cozy, baggy cardigan. You can choose between a longer, elegantly oversized design or one that drapes around your hips. Additionally, I strongly advise owning a well-designed “coatigan” that you may wear to any event. We tend to store our best things for rare occasions, but I think every day of life is one of those occasions. Take pleasure in your style and clothes! Additionally, you will appreciate dressing up for yourself at home now that the pandemic and COVID are affecting social gatherings and events. Another thing to consider regarding fleeces: if you plan to wear one for outdoor, active events, spend extra money on a higher-quality piece that looks more attractive and has more structure. The cheap, oversized fleece items are what will make you look dowdy.

9. Waistbands with elastic Ladies, although they may feel cozy, they will quickly make you look older. That waistline needs to be covered if you adore them and don’t want to part with them! To achieve this, you can either wear a longer top or just tuck your top in at the front and pull it out just far enough to hide the band. This is a terrific way to wear your elastic waist jeans and yet look put together; it’s called a French tuck. What to wear: Wearing tie-waist pants is an additional choice. Most likely, after seeing them, you wanted to give them a try! They are designed to have a prominent waistline and are typically high waisted options. Any sort of woman may effortlessly rock this look. Without taking the chance of looking ugly, you can still enjoy incredible comfort and a defined waist. Match with an in-tucked, fitting top. You will feel and look fantastic.

10. Bulky Earrings You are aware of my intended meaning by now. Yes, it is correct. Your earlobes will gradually stretch due to gravity and time. The heavier, older parts are the ones that weren’t designed with your long-term interests in mind! Fortunately, modern jewelry is made of considerably lighter materials, so even if you might wish to part with your old items, there are plenty to choose from!
