You want to dress like the woman you’ve become as a woman over fifty. However, the world we live in is preoccupied with youth and staying youthful. Consequently, you experience pressure to “look” younger by adopting the fashion styles of younger women.
However, this is not the proper strategy.
This year is my 63rd birthday. I’ve never felt or looked better, and it has nothing to do with attempting to look thirty! It’s because I look after myself and always adapt my look to fit my identity. I do not wish to appear half my age! I know I want to look fantastic for my age.
I created these fashion recommendations for ladies over 50 because of this.
The most important thing to keep in mind before we begin is that I never advise attempting to “dress your age.” We don’t discuss how your age affects your style very much in my Dressing Your Truth system! Rather, I educate ladies how to design their own personal style based on their own beauty type. Based on a few simple profiling techniques, you can easily identify which of the four Energy Types you are. After that, we really simply concentrate on your innate energy and movement, and you learn how to dress accordingly!

In the meanwhile, I’ve compiled a list of mature ladies over 50 fashion dos and don’ts. Think of them more as recommendations that will help you design a sophisticated yet distinctive wardrobe. Instead of just going for simple trends that could not suit your evolving body, you want a style that reflects your unique individuality. You’ll enjoy these recommendations if you’re wondering how to look fashionable after fifty!
- An excessive amount of makeup
Yes, we are immediately getting started. Do you want to age yourself right away? Wear excessive amounts of makeup.
Unfortunately, an older lady who wears too much makeup runs the risk of appearing harsh, unpleasant, or like she’s acting. Your skin will inevitably acquire fine lines and texture as you get older. However, they will not retain makeup properly at all when you apply thick layers on top of them. Your fine wrinkles will really be accentuated.
Avoid the classic “too much makeup” style, which includes dramatic blush, brilliant blue eyeshadow, heavy foundation, and feathering, bleeding, deep red lipstick.
The alternative is to do less. Reduce the amount of the vintage makeup style I described above. Steer clear of glitter in your eyeshadow because it will only get trapped in your wrinkles. Instead, go for matte tones; you’ll see a big difference.

- Cleavage
Cleavage is often seen as an indication of empowerment. Although exposing more skin may seem like a sign of sexual maturity and freedom, it appears desperate and ugly to women our age. It’s obvious what not to wear when it comes to cleavage!

- Oversized and baggy clothing
Every few years, baggy clothing is a part of a new fashion trend. We see young ladies and celebrities wearing big sweaters, huge shirts, and loose-fitting jeans. Because you believe they might conceal excess weight or other “imperfections” about your body as you’ve matured, you might even be inclined to wear them.
One exception exists. Fashionably loose pants are OK as long as you’re wearing a fitted top or even a blazer that fits well. Or, if you’re wearing fitted pants, like skinny jeans, you’ll look fantastic in a slouchy sweater. Avoid wearing loose-fitting apparel that covers every part of your body. For mature ladies, it simply doesn’t work!
Alternatively, dress in well-fitting clothing. You’ll be astounded at the distinction. You won’t be self-conscious or fearful of being noticed. You’ll be pleased with your body, confidence, and sense of style. However, don’t go overboard with “fitted”—anything too tight will draw attention to your features, which have naturally changed with age.
- Neutral, light hues
While wearing a light, neutral hue throughout your entire ensemble, jewelry, and accessories is not always a bad idea, I do advise against it.
For Type 4 women (the only Type of women that can wear black), a specific note: make sure that all of your shoes, jewelry, accessories, and clothes are different colors than black. Although black is a lovely neutral hue for you, you may add bold and vibrant colors to bring interest and personality to your ensemble because there are so many amazing Type 4 colors to choose from.
What to wear: Naturally, neutral hues are acceptable! However, you should make sure that they are a variety of colors that correspond to your type of beauty. I personally enjoy wearing monochromatic clothing as a Type 3, but I always make sure to mix it up with other vibrant Type 3 hues. Do you want to see for yourself? - Foot
Despite the fact that heels are typically associated with femininity, I believe we overvalue them. You don’t need them to feel sexy, and they’re actually bad for your hips, knees, and feet!
They’re just useless additions to any mature woman’s wardrobe as she gets older. More often than not, they lead to back problems and blisters rather than increased confidence.
Shoes to wear: Flats and slingbacks. Your joints and balance will be far safer with these shoes. True-to-Type shoes that are not only ideal for your Type but also comfy and give you style without sacrificing comfort are frequently featured on StyleInspire, which are Type-specific shopping boards reserved for our Lifestyle members.
- Hot pants and crop tops
To be honest, these are only trendy looks for young ladies and teenagers. You’ll notice fashion bloggers and influencers wearing these looks with ease. But exercise caution! Remember that you can be seductive without showing too much skin as an older woman over fifty. Hot pants, another name for “short shorts,” won’t make you look young and trendy, and crop tops will make you look much older.
Not worrying what other people think of me is one of the most liberating things about being a woman over 50. For me, dressing well isn’t simply about impressing everyone. We’ve moved past that! You are now at a place where you are at ease with who you are.
I want my wardrobe to complement my way of life in my later years. I want to be able to walk around freely, feel comfortable, and continue being active without having to worry about my shorts showing or my shirt riding up. Having garments that help me live a healthy life excites me even more!
Wearing shorts and t-shirts is OK as long as they provide adequate coverage. You can have loose-fitting but form-fitting clothes. Burmuda shorts, which fall just above your knees, will likewise look fantastic on you.
- An excessive number of outdated styles
You should exercise caution when combining too many “old-fashioned” products. For instance, you shouldn’t pair flesh-colored tights, Brogues, and a tweed skirt together. When combined, those will transport you back several decades—but not in a hip, retro way! They’ll just make you appear lot older than you want to be.
A subset of women completely give up on style and categorize themselves as “grandma” in terms of fashion, while others wish to maintain their youth by dressing in ways that make them appear younger. However, “Grandma is a role, not a style” is my credo for you.
You don’t have to start perming your hair and adopting your grandmother’s or mother’s style just because you’re over fifty. They wore what was popular at the time, but it’s not for you! There’s no need to fall back on the Beverly Hillbillies’ Granny.
What to Wear: To rapidly update your look, pair skirts with chic boots. Tennis shoes can also be a fun, laid-back choice, but make sure the rest of your ensemble is well-planned so your shoes stand out as a fashionable addition rather than an afterthought.
- Fleece
We love to grab fleece zip-up sweaters while we’re running to fetch the mail or take the dog for a quick walk because they’re quick, easy, and affordable. However, what do they actually say about your personality, style, and self? Not very much. Additionally, I don’t think these fleece sweaters do much to enhance our bodies as we become older than fifty.
What to wear: Choose a slouchy, bulky, toasty cardigan. You can choose between a longer design that seems stylishly large or one that drapes around your hips. Having a well-designed “coatigan” that you can wear to every event is something else I strongly advise. We frequently reserve our nice things for rare occasions, but I think every day of your life is a unique occasion. Enjoy your style and your clothing! Now that social activities and get-togethers are being impacted by the pandemic and COVID, you will like dressing up for yourself at home.
An additional fleece-related tip is to get a higher-quality item with more structure and a more attractive appearance if you plan to wear it for active, outdoor events. The inexpensive, loose-fitting fleece items will simply make you look shabby.
- Waistbands with elastic
Ladies, even if they are comfortable, they will make you look older right away. That waistline needs to be covered if you adore them and don’t want to part with them!
Wearing a longer shirt or just pulling out just enough to cover the band after tucking the front of your top in will accomplish this. This is known as a French tuck, and it’s a terrific way to add some flair while still wearing your elastic waist jeans.
What to wear: Tie-waist pants are an additional choice. Most likely, you’ve seen them and wanted to give them a try! They are designed to have a prominent waistband and are typically a high-waist alternative. This style would work well on women of various body shapes. Without running the danger of wearing something ugly, you can still get great comfort and a defined waist. Wear it with a tight-fitting top tucked in. You will feel and look fantastic.
- Bulky Earrings
You’re already aware of my intended direction. Yes, exactly. Your earlobes will gradually stretch due to gravity and time. It’s those heavy, outdated parts that weren’t designed with your long-term interests in mind!
Fortunately, jewelry is now manufactured of much lighter materials, so even if you might wish to part with your old pieces, there are plenty of new ones available!
What to do: We have gorgeous jewelry releases in the DYT Online Store that are tailored to your type. We take care to have a good balance of big and little components. You may be confident that even if you prefer large or thick earrings, they are still lightweight enough to wear repeatedly without causing your earlobes to sag!
