Style advice for ladies over fifty

Tip 1: Look for motivation
“What style are you inspired by?” is the first thing I ask my clients. Some people are inherently aware of their preferences but struggle to combine different styles. Others merely respond, “That’s why I hired you.” I’m in my 50s and have lost myself, so I don’t know anymore.

Tip 2: Recognize your favorite look
There is no use-by date for style. Having a mental idea of how you wish to present yourself is beneficial. No one wants to appear like “mutton dressed up as lamb” or “grandmotherly,” as much as I detest the term.

The majority of women over fifty, in my opinion, favor three looks or styles: classic/tailored, classic with an edge (my personal style), and casual/relaxed. Build your wardrobe around the look you want, depending on your personal style.

Third tip: Steer clear of unflattering trends.
Stay up to date with the latest fashions, but avoid going overboard, as this will only make you look older. Do you adore that statement necklace, hat, or amazing set of shoes but question whether you’re too old to wear them? You’re not, of course! If you stick to just one piece, you’ll seem put-together and trendy.

Tip 4: Combine and contrast
You can look a million dollars without spending a fortune. I advise combining non-designer items with designer ones. For instance, mix a classic blazer and a less expensive shirt with a fantastic pair of designer trousers or shoes.

Tip 5: Don’t be scared to wear colorful clothing.
Wearing black and grey can be highly aging, even though it might feel “safe” to cover up. If wearing color makes you uncomfortable, start with tiny pieces, such as a colorful scarf made of silk or wool or a necklace with beads, and gradually progress to larger pieces.

Tip 6: Covering your upper arms
I have some advice to make the issue spot look nicer, but most of us are aware of the dreadful “tuckshop mom” arms that seem inevitable as we age. Cover up with 3/4 sleeves or cap sleeves unless your arms are very toned. Styles with sleeves should be available if you search hard enough. There are many blouses and jackets that you can wear with a sleeveless dress or top in cases where you are unable to. The days of having to match everything, like our moms and grandmothers did, are long gone. Don’t be scared to try different colors, prints, and textures as long as your selection goes well with the ensemble.

Tip 7: Use the right hem lines
Don’t use minis! NO minis, I say again. In addition to avoiding short shorts and Daisy Dukes, hemlines should preferably be on the knees, either slightly below or above them. Having said that, if you have amazing legs and a lovely dress that falls above the knee (don’t wear minis, remember!) then go for it! Wearing stockings if appropriate and avoiding too much cleavage in the dress are also bad ideas.

Tip 8: Do some shopping
Entering a store that seems too young for you shouldn’t make you anxious. Enter with assurance and browse the racks. The variety of entertaining basic pieces that are suitable for all ages will pleasantly surprise you.

Tip 9: Pants are not leggings
Leggings should always be worn with a longer top. Yes, you can wear thin jeans or jeggings if you’re a fan! Always pair them with a shirt or flowing top. Jeans should never be torn; they should always be solid black or dark denim.

Tip 10: Invest in sunglasses and a designer purse with a timeless look.
Think of Coco Chanel or Audrey Hepburn. You deserve it now that you’re old enough! An investment that never needs to be updated is a luxury purse or a pair of sunglasses, which will last a lifetime and always be in style.
