Over-50 men’s fashion is usually a bit of a conundrum. Should it look forward? Is it appropriate for me to wear what I wore at thirty or even forty? What should fit?
Be current, be classic, and yeah, you probably shouldn’t look like a hipster, is the quick response to the questions above. Ironic fashion is what they’re toying with; it will make you appear to be stuck in the 1990s.
Shoes Not to Wear
The footwear is the first and most crucial aspect of the task. The shoe takes the lead. More than anything else, the shoe is a statement piece. To begin, here are some basic recommendations on what not to wear: Converse Chucks may look good on stylish women our age, but they make us feel depressed. They call us man-children, which is okay if you’re twenty but embarrassing if you’re fifty or older. The seaside exception, though, is a pair of white low-top Converse with white laces in the summer.
Anything that has a “dad” appearance should also be avoided. This style is an ironic twist on footwear, much like the hipster. Since it’s being used to describe something your dad would have worn, it’s just full-on dad in a bad way when worn by individuals like us.
How About Socks?
Another problematic issue is socks. Our guidelines are as follows: Paul Smith socks rule: never pair white athletic socks with anything other than athletic shoes; never pair white sneakers with black socks; and, when in doubt, choose something with a nubby texture.
Boost Your Sneaker Skills
This does not imply that all sneakers are no longer available. However, the sneaker game has to be improved. Monochromatic ivory Nike Air Max 90s can look fantastic. Another great shoe with a leather top and rubber sole that says “modern,” “casual,” but not “teenager,” is made by Common Projects. Naturally, avoid anything that is advertised as a “comfort shoe.” It’s true that some people have real podiatric problems, and they should dress accordingly. The “comfort shoe” may be in our future, but it hasn’t arrived yet for the rest of us.
Chic, Modern, and Classic
The takeaway is that you are a perceptive, smart man who has experienced decades of fashion shifts and understands how to balance the lines between chic traditional and contemporary. We advise sticking to rubber-soled shoes for the majority of situations, even though we know men who wear leather-soled boots or even traditional wingtips. Even a traditional Stan Smith or a desert boot with a crepe sole will work.
What you desire is relaxed confidence combined with subtle elegance. With the exception of true formal attire, uptight leather-soled shoes should be carefully evaluated before being worn. Doc Martens and combat boots are also banned.
