There it is, the feared “woman of a certain age.” Long employed as a stopgap, the tidy euphemism softens the less appealing message below: that a lady over a certain age is past her prime. We know better than that, of course. Being vibrant, attractive, and fashionable is ageless, and more and more women in their 50s and beyond are demonstrating these qualities for us these days. We’ve compiled some essential tips from leading stylists on how to maintain an impressive wardrobe over the upcoming decades, keeping in mind their inspiration.
First, the basics.
“I truly don’t care about trends for people of any age. Everyone ought to be elegant, smart, and timeless. A black sweater, a cream shirt, and a white blazer are some essentials that you should own; they will never go out of style. —Ashley Pruitt
“I think it looks cheap and uninspired most of the time when ladies wear large, eye-catching necklaces. In the incorrect way, it may make an ensemble stand out. Err on the side of minimalism for style. Andrew Gelwicks
“Accessories are entertaining! They are obviously utilitarian, but they may also completely change the look of your ensemble. Many designers are experimenting with different bag sizes, ranging from large to extremely small. “A woman who is carrying a ‘power’ bag demands attention.” Andrew Gelwicks

Verify that the bra size you are wearing is appropriate.
“Having your bra fitted correctly is more crucial than anything else. Every woman should have that essential item in her closet, and instead of merely estimating her size at the store, she should get fitted for it. —Paul Cavaco
“Don’t be scared of color.” Jane Fonda’s stunning Brandon Maxwell gown, which she wore to the 2017 Emmys, was a striking splash of color. I’ve really loved it, especially on older people, ever since I saw that on her. It is youthful and smart without being ostentatious or immature. Andrew Gelwicks
“The ideal item that any lady should own is a clean white button-down shirt. Although it looks elegant, it can be worn day or night while running errands. It’s a heroic piece. —Negar Ali Kline
Light denim reads a little more relaxed, whereas dark denim is more refined. Dark denim is a safe option in a work environment, but fit is more crucial than denim color. —Negar Ali Kline
Sam Edelman is a master at experimenting with color. They have many shoes that make a statement in addition to being solid staples. Andrew Gelwicks
Do you have on a skirt? Be mindful of your knees.
“Regardless of how gorgeous your legs are, I believe that at a certain age, your skirt should actually be at or below the knee. It doesn’t seem like you’re trying to seem younger, and it looks more acceptable.” —Paul Cavaco
“Getting your nails done makes a big difference. The simple things are what actually make you appear good. —Paul Cavaco

Decide where the most attention is needed.
“Many of the ladies I dress are insecure about a certain part of their bodies. You must draw attention to another area of your body to make up for whatever conservative choices you make about one. If you wish to avoid drawing attention to your shoulders, take a moment to stretch your legs. Andrew Gelwicks
“Wearing the proper shapewear underneath everything helps to give you smooth lines.” —Perry, Julia
Nobody should be able to advise you not to take chances.
“I believe there’s no reason why women at fifty can’t be a little bold and try something new, even though they are aware of who they are and are true to their style. There shouldn’t be any restrictions, in my opinion, whether it’s a print or a novel hue. —Negar Ali Kline
“A scarf can be used for a lot of things. In the evening, you can throw a silk scarf over your shoulders or wrap it around your neck. —Negar Ali Kline
“The ideal shoe to complete your ensemble is a loafer. You can wear them to run errands and then go out to dinner with friends, demonstrating how versatile they are. —Negar Ali Kline
Change it up.
“Carolina Herrera looks really stylish when she pairs a white button-down shirt with a ball gown skirt. The combination of the two items is a little surprising, but it works quite well. —Negar Ali Kline

“Usually, ladies are most concerned about their arms and stomachs. The stomach area may benefit from wearing a dress with ruching or draping. —Ashley Pruitt
“I wish more vibrant colors, patterns, and designs were worn by older women. Many women, in my opinion, feel as though they must somehow hide or reject their appearance, but that is untrue. Andrew Gelwicks
Hairstyles may make a big difference.
“You want to keep yourself looking current, and having a great hair cut and color makes a big difference.” —Paul Cavaco
“It’s particularly crucial that everything fits you after you reach a certain age. Many of the issues that arise are resolved when clothing is fitted properly. —Paul Cavaco
